CIMS In The Groove
The debut solo album from Marcus King, El Dorado, is a revelation. Passionate, penetrating and deeply soulful, El Dorado weaves soul music, gospel, R&B and country into a something modern and classic. Teaming with producer Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys) for sessions at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Studio in Nashville, the pair co-wrote the 11 songs on El Dorado along with esteemed writers on various tracks including Pat McLaughlin, Paul Overstreet and Ronnie Bowman.
Marigold is an urgent, multivalent meditation—and an expanded take on the blend of alt-country, indie rock and cerebral humanism that’s inspired the band’s ardent fan community. It marks their Rough Trade Records debut, offering what songwriter Evan Stephens Hall calls a “heart-first” perspective.
I've been in the game a long time, but I've always considered myself a student, says G. Love. Finishing this album with Keb Mo' felt like graduation. Recorded in Nashville with a slew of special guests including Robert Randolph, Marcus King, and Roosevelt Collier, The Juice is indeed diploma-worthy. Co-produced and co-written with GRAMMY-winning icon Keb Mo', it s an electrifying collection, one that tips its cap to more than a century of blues greats even as it offers its own distinctly modern pop spin on the genre and solidifies his place in music history as a genre-bending pioneer with a sound The New York Times described as a new and urgent hybrid and NPR called a musical melting pot. G. Love's lyrics are both personal and political here, artfully balancing his appreciation for the simple joys in life with his obligation to speak out for justice and equality, and his performances are suitably riotous and rousing to match, with infectious call-and-response hooks and funky sing-along choruses at every turn. Easy as it is to succumb to cynicism these days, the songs on 'The Juice' refuse, insisting instead on hope and determination in the face of doubt and despair. I've never been the kind of guy who thinks he s going to change the world with his guitar, reflects G. Love. But maybe I can write the kind of songs that give strength and encouragement to the people who are out there doing the work to make this planet a better place. Those are the people I want to lift up with my music.
"Black Hole Rainbow” was produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, The War On Drugs) in his iconic Downtown LA studio, with additional album production from Ariel Rechtshaid (Vampire Weekend, HAIM). Shortly after wrapping the recording, Devon and a team from Capitol embarked on a trip to South Africa to grasp the creative vision for the new record. One which you can see very clearly through the imagery associated with the roll out. “Get Out and Get It” was the first single and music video to be release, landing in the top 15 at AAA radio. “Even Though It Hurts” followed not long after with a visualizer and saw a lot of love from fans and critics alike. The upcoming record named “Black Hold Rainbow” will undoubtedly be one of the best debuts in 2020.

The deluxe, Collector's Editions include a full 30 minutes of extra material, including a gob-smacking drum solo demonstrating that even toward the end of his life, his playing was unsurpassable The Collector's Editions will be available in limited batches at a time, to optimise their value, and increase collectability. Includes full liner notes by Buddy's daughter Cath, who also appears as a guest vocalist on the recording 'My dad chose set lists for the two nights that I hadn't heard before. He was always brilliant in choosing the right sets, but this time he shied away from the tried and true and went to places musically that were very different. It was as if he knew that he didn't have to prove anything anymore and could relax and go wherever he wanted and enjoy it. I think the end result proves just that. For two incredible nights I got to sit in the audience and cheer right along with everyone else. I will always remember that time as one of the greatest moments in my life. Now I can revel in the fact that, thankfully, his last recordings were caught on tape for all of us to enjoy forever. It has taken thirty-three years to finally get these recordings out. An absolute labor of love that I never gave up on. At times it was quite a struggle, but in the end it was all about the music.'

'Come On Up To The House: Women Sing Waits' is a unique compilation full of fresh interpretations of songs by the legendary Tom Waits. Aimee Mann, Joseph, Patty Griffin, Rosanne Cash, Phoebe Bridgers, Corinne Bailey Rae, Angie McMahon, Courtney Marie Andrews, and more each put their own unique spin on the gravel-voiced songwriter's work. "...to hear it all through these women’s voices: for me, this is where the whole thing was delivered. I didn’t just want to go to church, I wanted to go to their church. In much the way Burt Bacharach songs often seem most fully themselves in the hands of Dionne Warwick, or Dusty Springfield, or Jackie DeShannon, The Shirelles, Aretha, or Karen Carpenter. Or the way standards feel so fully standard in Ella Fitzgerald’s rendering of the material. The Waits songs I was hearing through these women were breathing differently and deeply. In just the way Dylan cuts the definitive version but never stakes out the song’s territory in a way that leaves no room for majestic covers, the recordings I was gathering were showing me the remarkable strength, the resonance of Waits’ stuff. No one took ownership of the material, it was all on loan, still belonged to Tom Waits. But what a series of loans! And that’s how it is with the very, very best songs. It all brought me back to the Tom Waits I’d begun to see an outline of as a young man, back to the Waits my mother brought into the family dining room. That strange and beautiful character who seemed to belong to no one. Who I now believe belongs to us all.” - Warren Zanes, producer "Tom is a true original as a songwriter, singer and arranger. There just is no one like him. Beneath some of the layers of sound and his truly unique vocal phrasing, are some of the most beautiful and heartfelt songs I’ve ever heard. After some great creative discussions many years back with an old publishing colleague, the concept of focusing on the sheer beauty of these songs by having them interpreted by a group of amazing artists with stunning voices, was a must do project. Fast forward fifteen years later, we were thrilled with the passion and enthusiasm these artists showed when we approached them with the idea, which you can hear in their performances. Truly a musical celebration.” - Scott Robinson, executive producer

On her third album, Little Scream offers us a reflection on class and poverty in America. Speed Queen began as bits of prose written while touring her last album across North America-observing the slow entropy of the US, ruminating on her own low-income upbringing in a flyover state, and, as she says, "taking it all in from the privileged position of being a new Canadian." Montreal-based songwriter and guitarist Laurel Sprengelmeyer has been playing music under the moniker Little Scream since 2008. In 2011, she released The Golden Record, which Pitchfork dubbed "a stellar debut" and NPR called "an absolutely captivating record." It was included in NPR's Best Albums of 2011 list, and the New York Times evoked it's "hints of the divine," including Little Scream as one of the best new acts to follow at SXSW. Her second album and Merge debut Cult Following, which features guests including Sufjan Stevens, Mary Margaret O'Hara, and Sharon Van Etten, earned Little Scream new band of the week status from The Guardian and received five stars from Bust Magazine.
Close your eyes and imagine the Everly Brothers wearing tie-dyed Nudie Suits. Okay, now open them. There's Mapache. Youngn's Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci, the Mapache boys, are barely in their 20s and are already rising to the top of the new wave of West Coast Cosmic Americana. Born and raised in Glendale, California, their breathtaking harmonies and heartfelt yet heady sound, was honed by surfing the beaches and exploring the deserts and canyons of their native California. Dan Horne of Beachwood Sparks produced the album at the vintage analog halls of Valentine Recording Studios, where the tape rolled and captured the live spirited harmony, skillful strumming and genuinely well-crafted songs that everyone from Chris Robinson to Jonathan Richman have fallen in love with. The real charm lies in the simplicity of their voices and the songs that recall a young Gene Clark, The Louvin Brothers, Crosby, Stills and Townes...it's all there and more. Mapache was originally released in 2017 on a limited run that sold out instantly and is now available again on LP. As an added bonus, Mapache's 2018 Lonesome LA Cowboy 3-song EP is included with the CD as bonus tracks. This marks the first time the songs from Lonesome LA Cowboy are available on CD.
